private seniors' residence

What is a private seniors' residence?

A private seniors' residence is a housing complex that is mainly occupied by people aged 65 and over. In addition to room and apartment rentals, these centres offer different services in at least two of the following categories:

  • meal services
  • personal assistance services
  • nursing
  • domestic help services
  • security services
  • recreational services

Private seniors' residences are not subsidized by the health care system.

There are two categories of residences that provide different services:

SELF-SUFFICIENT CATEGORY SEMI-SELF-SUFFICIENT CATEGORY

At least two of these services must be offered:

  • meal services
  • domestic help services
  • security services
  • recreational services

Note:
Residences are categorized based on the services provided by the operator and not on the profile of the clientele.
This means that someone who requires nursing care or personal assistance services can stay in a “self-sufficient”
residence if these services are provided by a third party (e.g., the CSSS) and not by the operator. The range
of services offered indicates the operator's commitment to providing services for self-sufficient
or semi-self-sufficient seniors, as the case may be.

At least two of these services must be offered, including at least one personal assistance and/or nursing service:

  • meal services
  • domestic help services
  • security services
  • recreational services
  • personal assistance services
  • nursing

Before signing

Before they sign a lease, future residents must be informed about the services that are available from the operator.
They must also be informed that they will need to find another provider for any other service they may need.
