To improve front-line perinatal services in the region, Minister of Health and Social Services Gaétan Barrette announced that a new birth centre will be built on the territory served by Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux de l’Est-de-l’Île-de-Montréal (CIUSSS).
The birth centre will be located at CLSC de Mercier-Est, and is scheduled to open in November 2018. Work on the centre will begin in November, and be completed in October 2018. A team of 10 midwives will be working on site once the centre opens.
CLSC de Mercier-Est was chosen to ensure the various service sites are in close geographical and functional proximity to each other and are useful for young families. The birth centre will be located less than 6 kilometres from Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont, allowing for easy, direct access in case of emergency or need for specialized care
Over the past few months, the CIUSSS has developed a partnership with La Maison Bleue to better meet the needs of immigrant women and pregnant women who are vulnerable. A midwife has been added to the team at Maison Bleue in Saint-Michel.
