September 10 is 14th annual World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD). This year’s theme is "Allumés pour la prévention du suicide".
It is estimated that around the world, one person commits suicide every 40 seconds, and one person makes a suicide attempt every 3 seconds. In all, one million people worldwide commit suicide each year. This is more than the total number of people killed in wars and natural disasters combined. To that we can add ten million grieving relatives and friends. The goal of this Day is to raise awareness about the extent of the problem and ways to prevent it.
Light a candle: On September 10 at 8 pm, the International Association for Suicide Prevention is asking people around the world to light a candle near a window. It is a simple act to show your support for suicide prevention, to remember a lost loved one and for the all those grieving relatives and friends.
