Walking or playing outdoors without falling
To stay healthy, it’s important to exercise regularly throughout your life. Doing outdoor activities, even in winter, makes you feel happier and reduces stress and anxiety.
Regular physical exercise improves seniors’ quality of life as well as adults’ and young people’s concentration and performance at work or school.

- Reduces the probability of developing chronic diseases
Examples: diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases
- Reduces the risk of developing several types of cancer
- Increases healthy life expectancy

The city is full of activities for everyone all winter long.
Examples: hiking, skating, sledding, hockey, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing
In winter, it can be harder to stay safe when doing outdoor activities. Whether you’re out doing everyday activities or having winter fun, take extra care to prevent falls:
- Walk slowly and carefully; walk like a penguin when there is ice.
- Wear boots with anti-slip soles or grippers to walk on icy surfaces; don’t forget to take them off when you go inside.
- If you use a cane, attach a retractable ice pick to the end.
- Report untreated surfaces to the City of Montréal by calling 3-1-1.
