What is sexual abuse?
- Sexual abuse is an unwanted sexual act, with or without physical contact. In some cases, particularly when children are involved, the abuser may threaten the victim with serious consequences or play on the victim's feelings;
- Sexual abuse is a way for the abuser to satisfy his desires, using unduly using power, physical force and/or threats;
- Sexual abuse violates the victim's fundamental rights and is damaging to his or her physical and mental health.
In Québec, 69% of sexual assaults take place in private residences and the majority of the victims are less than 18 years old. The great majority of sexual assaults are committed by a person known to the victim. — agressionssexuelles.gouv.qc.ca
